How to Operate the Amazon Kindle 2

Operating an Amazon Kindle reader is easy but the following basic tips will make using the device even easier. The Kindle can also be used for basic web browsing and listening to music. The following tips deal only with downloading and reading articles or books.

Steps

1. Turn on the Amazon Kindle by moving the switch, located in the back of the reader, up. You will see the On and Off buttons.
2. To turn the Kindle off slide the switch to the Off position.
3. To read a stored Kindle selection, select the Menu button.
4. From Menu slide the button upward to Home. Depress the the white button. A selection of stored books and related reading material will be shown.
5. Move the white selection button to what you would like to read.
6. Once the selection is made, depress the white roller button. Your chosen selection will open to the first page of the book or article; or to the last page read. Other options inside the book or article include Go to Cover which takes you to the cover of the book; Go to Beginning which takes you to the start of the book; Go to Location which will you to select a page to read; Add Bookmark which will allow you to save a location.
7. To change the font size for a book or article select the Text button on the keyboard. The Text button has both a smaller and large "A" on the keyboard button.

9. A floating menu will appear on the screen. Select the text size by moving the white roller button among the selections. Depress the button once you have selected the correct font. The Kindle will then return to the original page you were reading after the selection is made.
10. Turn the Whispernet button on. The button is located in the back next to the On button.
11. To purchase documents once again return to the menu. Depress the white roller button when you select Shop in Kindle Store.
12. Select the article or book desired using the white roller button.
13. Purchase the item.
14. Your purchase is downloaded using Whispernet.
15. Use the roller button to select Check for New Items.
16. Open your new selection and start reading using the tips given.

Just to know Kindle 2 is the great ebook reading device

I'm an avid book reader and love to keep up on the latest gadgets and gizmos. I never knew the Kindle existed until I saw it on the Today Show last week. It peeked my curiousity since I love to read so much. After reading the reviews and pondering the price all day, I took the plunge. I'm SO happy I did! I ordered a light and case for it and had it shipped together with an original receive date of March 9th. Ugh. Well, I got it much sooner than that, obviously. I couldn't wait to get started. The battery was almost fully charged upon receipt so I turned it on and I was in business. It was so user friendly I didn't even need the instructions. I downloaded Twilight and have been entranced ever since. I haven't gone anyplace without it, and I think we'll be inseparable forever. I can't wait to show it off. I broke my thumb in a motorcycle accident a few years ago and it's uncomfortable for me to hold a book opened for any length of time. With my Kindle, no problem. Reading in bed is much more enjoyable too, no more adjusting the booklight every time I go to the next page. At first I thought I would for sure want a backlit screen, but after using it, I don't think that would work. This thing is so easy on the eyes, I like it better than an actual book. If you have ANY doubts about this ingenious gadget, I'm telling you, just do it! You won't be sorry!

The New Kindle 2 is a Big Improvement!

I just ripped through the pretty packaging and I love my new Kindle 2! (I'm a late 30's book lover. I read lots of fiction and non-fiction, and type in notes for my book club.)

It's much thinner (and evenly flat as opposed to wedge shaped like the Kindle 1).

The cover (sold separately) is a vastly better design with clips that hold the Kindle firmly with no straps or elastic. Real leather.

The font size options include a slightly smaller font that before--looks great.

The screen has a higher degree of clarity than the Kindle 1.

Navigation is much easier with the 5-way button.

The only negative: I miss having a dedicated button to deactivate the wireess, but the overall device has improved so much that I will get over the loss quickly.

Kindle 2 it exceeds my expectations

Kindle 2 Reader Review

Just got my Kindle 2 today. I had seen a Kindle 1, but did not own one.
Overall? I am thrilled! I had already purchased some free and cheap books (all of Mark Twain, all of Arthur Conan Doyle) as well as some "specialty" books (travel guide to Scotland) and a few bestsellers. I opened my box, plugged in the cord, and there they were! Easy to read, navigate, etc. Out of the box, it is elegant.

I am a Mac person, for the past 19 years. The Kindle 2 seems very "Maclike" to me--very well-designed. Very intuitive. A pleasure to handle and use.
Then I tried the "unusual."

I e-mailed a large .pdf file (a textbook instructors manual) to my kindle address. It arrived on the Kindle, correctly formatted! I was stunned!

After reading some websites, I added music. I put copies of a rainforest sound into the music folder for a sound machine when I travel. Worked perfectly.

Then I put copies of podcasts into the audible folder--some short, but also some longer lectures. They sound perfect.

Finally, I added some other mp3 files to the documents folder. When in that folder, you can choose which song you want to hear. It also keeps them from creeping into the audible folder (which I need to keep "pure" for my pseudo-sound machine). They sound great.

Text-to-speech is not as good as the ones I have purchased (at a much greater price than an actual book) But certainly good enough for the occasional listen as I find myself in the car.

I am still working on getting the web access to work well . . . it is adequate, but I can't seem to reach either yahoo or gmail. But these are not deal breakers.

I am a very heavy reader. The Kindle 2 will make it easy for me to read without spending a fortune. It will make travel MUCH more pleasant! I am very, very pleased with this purchase.

I really enjoy taking the Kindle to appointments where I have to wait and on vacation. I used to take several books in the suitcase, but now it lightens the load to take twice as many books on this small device.
